Spring 2019 Project:

Our Place's Therapeutic Recovery Community

Join the HeroWork community and help renovate an old youth detention facility into a place of healing and transformation.

May 13 - June 9, 2019

The Problem

Homelessness. Addiction. Incarceration. Marginalization. These problems represent a repeating complex and interconnected pattern that causes too much suffering in our community.

For people caught in this cycle, there are barriers to recovery such as trauma, brain injury, abuse, mental health, and criminal thinking. Many have had multiple failures through existing addiction and mental health services. Short term, single dimensional fixes simply aren’t effective for such a complicated problem.

A long term, innovative, and multi-faceted approach is needed to break this devastating cycle and heal this vulnerable part of our society.

The Solution

Our Place’s Therapeutic Recovery Community (TRC) is a multi-faceted, long-term recovery program. It will have a safe and structured environment guided by professional staff. The TRC will address the comprehensive, holistic, bio-psycho-social,  and ecological perspective of addiction, homelessness, and crime.

It’s modelled from the "Community as Method" approach pioneered by San Patrignano Therapeutic Community that reports a 72% full-recovery rate for residents who complete the program.

The goal is to foster individual change, and promote positive growth that helps an individual return to society and lead a productive life.

HeroWork's Role

Phase 1 of this facility is already open and will ramp up over time to enrol 50 men. Our Place has partnered with HeroWork to help complete Phase 2, which will enable additional men to transform their lives. Located at the former youth detention centre at 94 Talbot Road in View RoyalHeroWork’s job will be to take this place of incarceration and renovate it into a facility that engenders healing, community, and transformation.

Here's how you can help:

Community Collaboration is Key

Phase 1

The TRC represents a collaboration of many different groups. Our Place has the vision and expertise. Private partners and several government agencies have provided support, including $4.7 million by Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions for operations and $310K from BC Housing for Phase 1 renovations as well as a $1/year lease.

These resources have Phase 1 of the TRC operational (Building B, A, and parts of F, below).

Phase 2 - HeroWork

This phase represents another BIG collaboration. A private donor will revamp the courtyard into a beautiful healing landscape. At the same time, HeroWork will mobilize our community (up to 100 companies and hundreds of volunteers) to renew the detention  facility into a home for 50 men. This means that in Building C we will redo 25 two-person suites, as well as upgrade the flooring, electrical, plumbing, storage rooms; build a library; redo the common areas and much more.  We will also double the size of the dining room, relocate the art area, build an outdoor pavilion and infrastructure required for food production. The list goes on.
